Cultivating Community: A Garden for Ethos Café

Updated: Oct 9, 2024

Last Tuesday, instead of our usual staff hui, we gathered for a working bee to kick-start the garden for Ethos Café, right in front of the hub behind the car park. The sun was shining, the music was playing, and everyone found a role. Whether it was pulling out tape and staples from the cardboard or shoveling compost and horse manure into wheelbarrows, every pair of hands helped bring this garden to life. As the whakataukī says, *mā pango, mā whero, ka oti te mahi*—with teamwork, the job was done.

We laid out the beds with cardboard and covered them with compost, using up the first load. We're now eagerly awaiting the second trailer to finish the project. The garden will supply fresh, sustainable produce for Ethos Café, making it a true “farm-to-plate” experience with food growing just 30 meters from the kitchen. This initiative, led by our new head chef, Chris, aims to create a buzz around the café while showcasing our commitment to sustainability and connection to nature.

A big thank you to everyone who pitched in! Keep an eye on your emails for the next call to help as we continue this exciting project in the coming weeks.
