Exploring Karakia: Building Connection and Understanding

Today, our staff hui took a unique turn as we delved into the the world of karakia. It holds immense cultural significance and serves as a powerful tool for fostering connection and understanding within our organisation.

Before diving into an engaging activity with rākau (cuisenaire rods), we took the time to discuss what karakia means to us and why it's essential. Karakia isn't just about words; it's about the intention behind them and the deep respect for cultural traditions. It serves as a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms, grounding us in the present moment while honoring the wisdom of our ancestors.

The activity itself was a testament to the creativity and collaboration within our team. Using the rākau, we visually represented three karakia Tuia, Unuhia and Nau mai e ngā hua, each group infusing their own unique interpretation and energy into the process. It was a refreshing departure from conventional learning methods, sparking lively discussion and encouraging everyone to tap into their creativity.

Through this experience, we not only gained a deeper appreciation for the significance of karakia but also strengthened our bonds as a team. By engaging in cultural practices like karakia, we honor diversity, promote inclusivity, and create a more enriching environment for everyone involved.

Today's staff hui was more than just a meeting; it was a celebration of culture, connection, and creativity. As we move forward, let's continue to embrace opportunities for learning and growth, drawing inspiration from the traditions that unite us as a mission.

Haumi e, hui e, taiki e!
