Last Tuesday, we gathered for a special staff hui to celebrate Matariki. The session began with learning a Matariki waiata and then we then split into five groups, each tasked with creating actions or a performance to accompany the waiata. Even though we didn't capture these masterpieces it was great way to learn and get creative around Matariki.
We didn't get enough time to go through the whole presentation which spoke to what exactly Matariki is, why it is celebrated and how we as a mission can integrate these celebrations into our mahi. You can view the presentation here and find out more information and resources on Matariki here.
Following the waiata, we transitioned into a star-making activity. While some found this task straightforward, others faced challenges. This experience offered a valuable opportunity for self-reflection and great way to build empathy and understanding. This activity emphasised the importance of patience and the tuakana/teina relationship, where those who grasped the activity quickly could support those who struggled. This nurturing approach is a cornerstone of our mission values.
Regardless of the outcome, we encouraged everyone to display their stars on the pin board in Awhitia. This serves as a reminder of our how we are unique and diverse. For those who wish to complete or create another star, instructions can be found here.
