Vaiaso o le gagana Samoa!

Celebrating Samoan Language Week 2024!

Today, our staff hui was an exuberant celebration of Samoan Language Week - Vaiaso o le gagana Samoa. The event was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to immerse themselves in the rich culture and traditions of Samoa, led by the enthusiastic and knowledgeable team of Lucy, Musika, Natalie, and Kristina.

The celebrations kicked off with an engaging warm-up activity led by Musika, who taught us a traditional Samoan clapping game. This not only got everyone energised but also set a joyful tone for the rest of the day. The rhythmic clapping and laughter filled the room, creating a sense of unity and excitement.

Following the warm-up, we delved into a comprehensive presentation about Samoa. This insightful session covered various aspects of Samoan life, including its geographical location, fascinating cultural facts, traditional food, arts, and the significant practice of tatau (tattooing). For those who wish to revisit the presentation, it is available here.

Our next activity was learning the popular Samoan song, "Savalivali." The melody and lyrics quickly became a favorite, and it was a delight to see everyone singing along. To put our new knowledge to the test, we then participated in a matching game, which was a fun and interactive way to reinforce what we had learned.

Creativity was in full swing during the lolly lei-making activity. Each staff member had the chance to create their own small Ula lei, learning about its cultural significance along the way. The room buzzed with conversation and laughter as everyone proudly displayed their colorful leis, symbolising respect and love in Samoan culture.

We then watched a 10-minute video about the Taualuga dance, a pivotal aspect of Samoan celebrations. The video provided a deeper understanding of the dance’s importance and its role in the cultural tapestry of Samoa. Lucy had also organised a live performance featuring daughters of Lucy and Manilla & Fa'amanu, who beautifully demonstrated the Taualuga dance. This performance was an unforgettable highlight, offering staff members a chance to join in and learn some of the traditional actions and dances.

The morning concluded with a delightful feast of freshly made Pani popo (coconut buns) and Kokolaisa (coco rice). These delicious treats were a perfect ending to our vibrant celebration, leaving everyone with a taste of Samoa.

Overall, today’s hui was a fantastic celebration of Samoan culture and language. It was a day filled with learning, laughter, and a deepened appreciation for the rich heritage of Samoa. A big fa'afetai tele lava (thank you very much) to Lucy, Musika, Natalie, and Kristina for organising such a memorable event!
