Farewell for John Poihipi

After eight years of faithful service, we farewell John Poihipi with deep gratitude and respect as he concludes his time with Mahi Mihinare Anglican Action. John’s journey with us has been one marked by growth, humility, leadership, and a deep commitment to tangata whaiora within our Men’s Reintegration spaces.

John began his mahi with us at Kaainga Taupua, stepping into the role of mentor. From those early days, it was clear that he brought not only dedication, but heart - a deep understanding of people, of struggle, and of hope. Over time, John’s strengths as a steady presence and natural leader were recognised, and he moved into the role of Co‑Team Leader, walking alongside others, guiding with care rather than command.

His most recent role as a Key Worker at Manaaki Mai allowed John to continue to serve some of our most vulnerable men with compassion and integrity. No matter the title, John’s focus never shifted: supporting tangata whaiora to reconnect, rebuild, and re‑imagine their lives with dignity.

As John reflected on his journey, he was quick to acknowledge those who shaped and supported his development along the way. He spoke with appreciation of Tinirau, Andre, and Sika, whose influence and encouragement helped sharpen his practice and confidence. He also thanked Karen and Peter for recognising his leadership early on, believing in his potential, and creating space for him to step forward and grow.

Colleagues across Mahi Mihinare consistently speak of the qualities John brought to his mahi. His commitment to bringing his culture into his work has enriched our spaces, grounding them in authenticity and respect. John’s quiet, thoughtful presence often spoke louder than words. When he did speak, people listened. There was care, consideration, and wisdom in his voice, always centred on the wellbeing of tangata whaiora.

Above all, John is known for his heart. A heart for the men he walked alongside. As John now returns to Kaainga Taupua, it feels very much like a full‑circle moment. It is where his journey with us began, and where his heart has always remained. There is still important work to be done, and we recognise that his calling continues, just in a new season.

John, you will be greatly missed by us his colleagues and tangata whaiora alike. Thank you for your years of service, your leadership, your cultural integrity, and the aroha you brought into every space. We wish you every blessing for what comes next, and we know your impact will continue to be felt for many years to come.

Haere rā, with our thanks and our prayers.
